All Anxious and Stupid
By michelle | August 12, 2010
UPDATE: Everything went amazingly well.. and I didn’t even use the nitrous. It just made me feel like the room was spinning, so I stopped right after the shots (which actually don’t scare me at all). My real problem is with the way the Novocaine makes me feel: heart beating too fast, hard to breathe, etc. I made it through that and was completely fine.
It is 11:30pm, and I need to go to bed.
What is keeping me up, you say?
My dreaded dentist appointment in the morning.
You see, I went to the dentist a couple of months ago for some routine work. Nothing too major. Realizing that I have been through many events in my life that were much more dramatic and painful (including the two inductions of my babies without the use of pain meds, no pain meds for the littlest guy either), I expected that I would handle the appointment ok. Not great, but ok would have been adequate.
Well, ok was no where near how I behaved.
Let me put it this way:
I was apologizing to the dental hygienist on my way out the door.
I was pathetic!
This time around, I’m going for the nitrous oxide because I don’t think I can handle another appointment like that. I was ridiculously anxious and paranoid. It was embarrassing.
I think my dentist is going to be very happy to hear my change of plans, too.

I just told my husband that I am going to bed “all anxious and stupid”.
Yep, that’s me… tonight.
Hopefully, I’ll be calm and quite intelligent by tomorrow afternoon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Feel free to say a prayer for me in the morning, around 9am.
I’ll take all the help I can get!
AW, I definitely empathize with you…my husband gets SERIOUSLY anxious when he goes to the dentist. A few years ago, he actually suffered full blown panic attach – it was horrible. The dentist office said that it’s more common than you think and that they sometimes prescribe a little something just for that day for the patients nerves. Saying a prayer for you – and know you aren’t alone. Going to the dentist stinks !!!
I HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR!!! I hadn’t been to the dentist in over 10 years because of my last experience. I finally found a dentist who could put me to ease. I walked in, told him how I felt and he totally understood. I now go religiously every 6 months. BTW…nitrous oxide is definitely the way to go.
I am glad that it went well. I am sorry that I did not get to read about the prayer request until after the procedure was over.
You sound a lot like me…
I’m glad it went fine!! I used to not be nervous about the dentist at all but ever since I had an experience at the dentist while pregnant….I’ve had some fears about it! It’s weird how one experience can do that to you!
