She’ll Go When She Wants To Go
By michelle | July 16, 2010

Our potty adventures with Spunky began a long while ago, and I thought that this was it! The first day had gone so well, but day two and day three yielded no success. Then by day four, Spunky was fighting and crying when it was time to go potty. I do not want to force her to do it and make it a miserable experience.
From that point on, I let Spunky decide when she wanted to use the potty. A couple of times of day, she will go on the potty. What, or rather, who has helped her the best is her big brother. He has been such an encouragement to her, and he cheers her on. He even started taking her to the potty, which means he gets a reward when she does (which is his favorite part). She is doing well, but still wears a diaper most of the time.

After our trip, I am going to try to finish up the “potty training”.
Hopefully, it will go smoothly since she’s had some time to practice.

Yeah, you can’t force them to go so you might as well wait till they are ready!! It’s not worth the fight! I bet she will get it real soon! Hayden was a little over 3 and potty trained in a few days!! I usually just wait till they are ready….cause I hate messes!!

My oldest was 3 yrs and 2 months. We finally gave her an ultimatum and some very frilly underpants. She started the day with frillies. Once they were wet, they were replaced with plain, boring, bulky white training pants – no exceptions. She was trained in 3 days. This was all on her great-grandmother’s advice.
#2 and #3 were easier and sooner. We had M&Ms and a little chart for #4. He was three too. #5 was like Spunky. He gave some false alarms a few times. Having more experience this time I didn’t sweat it. I knew he would not be in kindergarten in diapers. When he was just under three, he decided he wanted to go potty. He had accidents a few times, but that was it. PLUS we sent him in with his older brother (#4) who gave him lots of encouragement. It got to the point where he had a little crowd outside the bathroom door cheering him on. Who couldn’t go with that encouragement? (c; We also got character (Thomas, etc.) underpants.
I feel your pain because I’ve had three in diapers twice now (1-2-3 and 2-3-4). Best of luck!

Don’t give up! I thought Sarah was going to be so much easier than Rebekah because she starting going on the potty at 18 months, almost immediately after you put her on, but she finally decided she could tell us when she had to go (not have to take her every 2 hours) and not have accidents when she turned 3. She had been staying drive overnight for months, so I knew she was ready, she just needed to take ownership of it!

My oldest was over four before she “got” #2 and finished potty training.
My middle was 2.5yrs. Go figure.
