Staying Away From BPA- It Is In Cans, Too!
By michelle | February 12, 2010
As before any fasting period, I purchased a load of canned beans this week.
You might remember that I am a Lazy Bean Lady.
But that was right before I read this from the article The Top 10 Toxic Products You Don’t Need at Eco Child’s Play:
3. Canned food: It’s probably shocking to find a food item on a toxic product list, but it’s no mistake. Food cans are lined with an epoxy resin that contains bisphenol-A (BPA). Most experts believe this is our main source of exposure to BPA, which has been linked to hormone disruption, obesity, heart disease, and much more. Eden Foods is currently the only company with BPA-free canned foods (other than the canned tomatoes, which they haven’t found an adequate substitute for given the acidity of the tomatoes). Opt for fresh, frozen, dried or jarred foods. (Click here to read the FDA’s January Update on BPA)
Now I guess I have to stop using canned foods. It will definitely help me to save money, but not time. If I can just remember to soak the beans the night before, I’ll be ok. It is going to be learning experience for me.
I feel that if I claim to be a somewhat “green” person, then when I find out about things like this, I need to follow through. For now, I will use up what I have in the pantry, but afterwards, I will only buy frozen, jarred or fresh. I’m going to have to keep my eye out for good deals now, too.
I hope you can feel compelled to join me on my new path toward
a can-free lifestyle!

I remember hearing about the cans thing not too long back and being surprised (and glad that we rarely use canned goods since we try to buy mostly fresh). I read somewhere else that canned tomatoes or tomato sauce or salsa are the worst because the acid in the tomatoes eats the lining and pulls more of the BPA into the product. YUCK!!

Thanks for this. Pretty depressing though because canning should be a reliable, cheap way to preserve food and fresh veg is so over-the-top expensive here.

Bummer. What am I going to do?! I can never soak the beans the right way! Every time I soak them, they still come out crunchy.
But you know what, Soaked beans taste so much better than canned! Especially in hummus! Guess I’m gonna have to start canning my tomatoes from the garden too. Heck, all these things are better for you and cheeper! If only we could use the money we save to buy some more time!

I remember hearing about this on the news. It’s in plastic bottles too so we stopped buying jelly in squeezable bottles and buy it in glass jars now. Sigh… now I have to make sure not to drop things in the kitchen again!
