Recipe: Homemade Hamburger Helper
By michelle | July 2, 2009
Our family loves Hamburger Helper, and for a long time now I have been wanting to find a healthier, homemade version. I looked online, but couldn’t find a recipe that I liked. So, for Father’s Day, I just made one up on the spot. And it was delicious! My hubby literally ate almost half of it by himself, and Punky even ate the ground meat, which he never does!
Homemade Hamburger Helper
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground meat (beef, chicken or turkey)
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2-4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 Tbsp crushed red pepper
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- salt, to taste
- 1/2 lb elbow macaroni
- 2 cups cheese (I used a Mexican mix of shredded cheese)
- 1/4 cup milk
Directions:
- Cook elbow macaroni according to box (al dente)
- Saute onion and garlic with a little bit of water
- Add beef and spices to the onion and garlic mixture. Brown the meat.
- Add cheese and milk.
- Drain pasta and add to meat and cheese mixture.
- Combine until mixture thoroughly.
You can even freeze the leftovers. Enjoy!

Awesome recipe! I have written that down and am going to try that this weekend with my husband. He, too, loves hamburger helper and I have always wanted something a bit healthier and a bit more not-from-a-box. This may be the solution! Thank you!
