Diaper Chatter: Why I Choose Cloth

By | February 19, 2009

I’ve always wanted to be a mommy. But as a child, I never could have imagined the type of mommy I was going to become.  As soon as I became pregnant with my first child, my perceptions about life changed.  I started buying organic, using natural cleaners, and recycling.  I hadn’t anticipated that the reality of bringing a child into this world would affect the way that I take care of it.  But it did; and it has.

Cloth diapering didn’t come first in the process.  It started with making my own organic baby food.  Then I moved on to buying Seventh Generation diapers for a while (I still love their wipes).  And when we found out that we were having another child, I decided that I wanted to use cloth diapers.

I went online, compared prices and even created a chart to show my husband all of the research I had done.  But when it came down to it, I never bought the diapers.

Then my little girl was crawling and moving all around.  One morning she woke up with a burst diaper.  This sight made me take the initiative to buy the cloth diapers.  Seeing those little slimy beads all over my precious baby girl made me angry.  How could I be contributing this to the world?  How could I be exposing my children to these chemicals and then letting them travel into the water while sitting in landfills for hundreds of years?

I decided that I had to make a change.

I sought out a local woman who makes wonderful diapers.  She made me several, and I fell in love!

Yes, they are more work and you will have to do more loads of laundry (we all know how much I love laundry- haha).  Yes, you actually have to deal with poo.

But the benefits are phenomenal.  We are saving a lot of money and contributing to the preservation of our earth.  I hated the fact that I was adding to the pollution in the world.  Now, I no longer feel that way.  We have fewer leaks and no more diaper rashes.  And to top it off, she has an adorable little cloth diaper booty.

I love my cloth diapers and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

all of you with great cloth diaper stories to share! I wish I had given it a try. But at 20 months, and no more babies in the future, I think it’s a little late to make the investment. Oh well. Just another lesson I’ve learned so far!

I started making more environmentally conscious decisions after our blessing arrived too. It’s amazing how a little one changes so many things!

Have a great day!

We didn’t have our own washer and dryer with my oldest, so used disposables, but we used cloth almost exclusively with my youngest (I used disposables overnight, and when travelling)

I didn’t think an extra load now and then was a bad plan, and the benefits were great.

Totally agree on all of these. And yes! Those little cloth diaper bums are pretty cute!

I have to say, you had me at “quick-cooking!” :)

And then I read some great posts! Thanks for sharing your cloth diapering story!

Since you said not to be shy I’ll ask – would you add me to your blogroll? I’d sure be honored.
